Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

You may have wondered, "Is chiropractic care safe during my pregnancy?" Yes! Studies have shown that there are no known contraindications to chiropractic care during this time. Chiropractic is a safe health care route during your pregnancy. Many people are unaware that chiropractors routinely take care of pregnant women and some chiropractors (including myself) take a specific interest in prenatal and post-natal care with additional training. These Chiropractors have all been trained to work with pregnant women and will use techniques that avoid any unneeded pressure on the abdomen.

So why choose to add chiropractic to your health care team?

During pregnancy there are several changes that will occur including both endocrinologically and physiologically, in preparation for creating the environment best suited for the developing baby. Some of these changes include:

  • protruding abdomen
  • pelvic changes
  • postural adaptations
Establishing and maintaining pelvic balance and alignment during this time is an excellent reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the baby. This restriction is coined "intrauterine constraint". Not only will this cause discomforts but may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best position for delivery. This will then ultimately affect mom’s ability to have a natural non-invasive birth.

Chiropractic recognizes the nervous system as the master communication system to all the body systems including the reproductive system. Keeping the spine aligned helped the entire body to work more effectively and efficiently.

Potential Benefits of Chiropractic care during this time include but are not limited to:

  • ·         maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • ·         controlling symptoms of nausea
  • ·         reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • ·         relieving back pain and neck or joint pain
  • ·         Prevent potential C-section delivery

As you seek care during this time, seek out a chiropractor who is trained in pregnancy care. If you are not from the surrounding areas of West Point, Beemer, Howells, Schuyler, Dodge, Clarkson, Wayne, etc, you may find a chiropractor in your area by going to icpa4kids.org/find-a-chiropractor/
